Sunday school: Effective ways of making your lesson cater to all learning types.

Effective ways of making your lesson cater to all learning types:

We all know that not all learners are the same, every learner understands things differently, every learner processes information differently, and every learner has their own unique learning style. Preparing and setting up for a lesson, can be a nightmare of its own, what more accommodating each learners learning style. Amanda what are you saying? I hear you asking me, relax it isn’t as complex as it sounds. It is possible to have a lesson, a simple lesson for that matter that, just caters to every learning style.
What are learning styles Amanda? Learning styles are patterns or a specific manner in which an individual or learner grasps or receives information. Simple right?
Learning styles: I t is important to understand each learner style, this helps classify each learner in your class, and it gives you support on how to set up your lesson to accommodate each learning style.

1.      Imaginative learner: This type of learner are learner who are feeling based, they like working with others, and thrive in a team work setting. They like to share their thoughts, ideas, excellent listeners, and are curious. They learn best through their senses; sight, touch, smell, and taste.
An imaginative learner will ask why they need to know this? Teacher will focus on meaning or moral of the story.

2.      Analytic learner: This type of learner; learns through watching and listening. This learner evaluates information given to him or her by the teacher and cautiously assess it. This type of learner is considered to be a perfectionist, and goes out of his or her way to be right and good. They learn through receiving factual information.
An analytic learner will ask; “What do I need to know?” Teacher will focus on content of the lesson facts.

3.      Common Sense learner: This type of learner is a practical learner, they like DOING more than anything. They like to test theories, to see possibilities of what works and what doesn’t. They come up with ideas of how to solve a problem; this learner thrives when learning is combined with doing.
A common sense learner will ask; “How does this work?” Teacher will focus on the experience of the lesson.

4.     Dynamic learner: This type of learner is more of an explorer, an adventurer, and risk taker. Like the common sense learner the dynamic learner does appreciate a good experience of getting things done. They thrive in situations that demand flexibility, and change. They love starting something new, and being authentic in any project they are involved in.
A dynamic learner will ask; “What can this become?” Teacher will focus on adding creativity in the lesson and application story.

Effective ways of making your lesson cater for to all learning types:

The purpose of a lesson is to introduce new information, share information, and to provide a learning moment that leads to creative application. I am sorry if that sounds a little bit much, if it does read it slooooower and think about it.
Think about this, if a learner does not receive any stimulation from the lessons we teach them, then why are they there? This is why we need to ensure the lesson is stimulating for all learning types, by so doing we are confident in the fact that they are learning and growing.
We’ve covered in the previous blogs on how to plan a lesson; https://littlelambsofchrist.blogspot.com/2023/08/tips-on-how-to-plan-for-lesson.html

  • ·        Introduce the lesson: Introduce the lesson of the day, and then ask the class, whether any of them know the lesson? If you have any hands give them a minute to explain or tell us what they know about the lesson. – Teacher here, you have started with what the learner knows and you will see your imaginative learners come to life. They are instantly stimulated.
  • ·        Facts: When preparing for the lesson, we can try find fun and cool facts about the lesson. Facts like, how people in the bible dressed, how their houses looked, that they didn’t have cars, and any fast foods that they like, and more interesting facts. This will stimulate our common sense learners.
  • ·        Creativity: We need to find creative ways of stimulating the dynamic learner. This could be a craft they get to do in class, or a worksheet that they can take home and put their name on.

Catering to every learning style makes teaching easy, since you have engaged each and every learner and when they are engaged they aren’t easily distracted. When you can engage your learners then, you know you are able to teach effectively, and give them the best of you as a teacher. Catering to all learners gives each learner a fair chance to learn, grow and apply that which they learn in their daily lives, I think this I  have said this before, this is my daily prayer as a Sunday school teacher. I hope you have been enlightened, and have enjoyed and learned a thing or two from this piece.
