How to teach Kids Bible class?

How to teach Sunday school or Kids Bible class?

The question of note, if I received a rand each time I was asked this question, believe me, I would be a millionaire right now. The idea of teaching kids can be really daunting; many of us think kids are these great big snot-nosed rats that do not listen.

We feel so overwhelmed by our fears of teaching and guiding the little lambs of of Christ such that our fear is all that clouds our efficacy in becoming the best teachers we are called to be. We tend to make mountains out of molehills, whooooooooossssssaaaa.

The answer is simple, when teaching or doing anything, as a matter of fact, we go to the basics, the fundamentals, and the fundamentals of Kids Bible class or Sunday school are what we spoke about last week. When teaching Kids Bible or Sunday school, we need to be guided by God through His word because that is the only way to teach, and that is all that we teach.

We must have a good relationship with God. How do we have a strong relationship with God if we do not know his word? We need to fully understand his word; how do we teach that which we do not know? Remember, Christ is our shepherd, who constantly shepherds his flock; why not ask guidance from him? To him belong the little lambs.

In Matthew 28:20, Christ commands his disciples and us to teach all that he has commanded us and them. From where has he commanded us? His word—from where did he command or teach them? When he walked with them, he said, "Teaching them all that I have commanded you." Again, we are reminded to teach from his word.

2 Timothy 3:16: "All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness." When we teach, we teach from the word of God; in his word we find his commands, and through his word he speaks. As teachers, we need to meditate on the word of God; we need to know and understand what we teach, as Joshua 1:8 and James 3:1 remind us.

2 John 1:9 "Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son." It is important that we become imitators of Christ, obviously as Christians, but in the classroom we must imitate Christ, and in the manner of our teaching we must glorify God. Through us, the Kingdom of God is revealed.

We must be loving, patient, peaceful, joyful, kind, good, faithful, gentle, and exude self-control. I know this one is not part of the fruit of the Spirit, but it is just as important. We need to be forgiving.

Titus 2:7 "Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching, show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned."

We do not teach love but show hatred.

Are on time for class.

Are well prepared for class.

Keep growing as a teacher.

Colossians 3:17 "Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus."

The how is in having a close relationship with God and understanding that through his word he guides us and gives us strength to teach his little lambs, and how are we guided if we do not hear from him? We hear from him by reading his word. We teach from his word, and from his word only; we must know and understand what we teach. As teachers, it is important to remember that we are imitators of Christ. The manner in which we carry ourselves in the classroom is important not only for the kids but for God as well.

Share your fears of teaching, and if you have any teaching experience, what was your first time like? If you haven't taught Sunday school, why haven't you? Is it fear that holds you back? Share your thoughts and comments. I love hearing from you.
